Vic played college football at Long Island University, and later went on to earn a doctorate in physical education from Columbia University. He served as head coach at Ohio’s Defiance College in 1951 and at San Francisco State University from 1961 to 1989. Vic was also the head basketball coach at San Francisco State for the 1957-58 season. SFSU was a small, west coast college football powerhouse, winning eight Far Western Conference titles before 1967. Two of Vic’s assistant coaches went on to lead teams as head coaches in Super Bowls — Andy Reid with the Philadelphia Eagles, and Mike Holmgren with both the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks. Vic’s other disciples include Gil Haskell, Bob Toledo, and Floyd Peters. Additionally, Vic’s son Keith coached various NFL teams for more than 25 years.
